A lot of people don’t have their wishes in writing. They find themselves in a situation that could have been avoided — or have left loose ends for others to figure out.
Friends and loved ones are left shaking their heads because whatever happens during the crisis isn’t what they think so-and-so would have wanted, but nothing legal was in place.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Completing a Durable Power of Attorney and Patient Advocate Designation (sometimes referred to as Power of Attorney for Healthcare) isn’t as complicated as their names imply. In fact, most people that do one also do the other, so you could have both done in a short period of time.
Having these documents done is smart. You can do them on your own. Waiting is an option but not one I recommend.
They offer a chance to declare wishes for yourself or a person with some level of disability (including memory loss). Durable Power of Attorney allows someone to step into your shoes and do everything you can’t.
I created a website with do-it-yourself processes, so your loved ones can avoid going to court for guardianships and conservatorships if you become disabled. You’ll save money and gain peace of mind.
