What’s the status of your Will? You know … THAT document. The one you haven’t yet completed.
Maybe it’s time to get that done — especially if you have children.
If you have children, you can put into your Will who it is you want to be appointed guardian over your children if you die. That person will have priority for the appointment — instead of family members fighting over who gets your children.
Here’s the truth: I’ve seen what can happen when people don’t have a Will. I spent decades in the court system as a clerk, a lawyer and now am a retired judge. So many uncomfortable and unfortunate situations can be avoided by having a Will in place.
It doesn’t take as long to complete as most people think it will. You don’t have to pay an attorney. The hardest part is deciding to dive in and make some decisions.
You might not care about what happens after you die. The people left dealing with whatever you didn’t will care. Your Will is very important to those you leave behind, especially your spouse and children.
It also helps everyone avoid conflict. Who has dibs on that furniture or artwork? Which keepsakes should go where? There won’t be any question if it’s all in your Will.
There’s a link to a DIY Will information on my website that will allow you to avoid hundreds of dollars in attorney fees. At least go look at it. Consider leaving it open in your browser until you get it done.
I know you’re busy. I know you don’t want to deal with a Will (especially if you don’t have children), but you should. Get your Will done ASAP. It will let everyone know (including the court) what your wishes are for your children and property after you are deceased.
If you find you need some guidance, I have 30- and 60-minute personalized consultations available. Make your wishes known. A lot of people will be grateful.
